Women's AOTW awards go to Mesa's Garrido, Sanchez

San Diego Mesa College tennis player Danielle Garrido and Mesa diver Liz Sanchez share Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women's Athletes of the Week honors for April 10-16.

Garrido, a sophomore from Culver City High School and the defending CCCAA State Community College champion, won the PCAC singles title for the second consecutive year, defeating Palomar's Veronika Kremennaya 6-2, 6-0 for the title on the final day of the conference tournament on Saturday at Southwestern College.

Garrido is undefeated in two seasons for the Olympians. A year ago, she completed her unbeaten freshman season by sweeping Orange Coast's Chrisse Colling 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the championship match of the state tournament at Ojai.

Sanchez, a sophomore out of Grossmont High School, won the PCAC 1-meter and 3-meter titles, held in conjunction with the Southern California Regional Diving Championships over the weekend at El Camino College.

She finished fifth in Southern California on the 3-meter board with a score of 182.15 and sixth on the 1-meter board with a 155.15 score, qualifying for the state swimming and diving championships in both events for the second straight year. The state finals will be contested on May 4-5 at East Los Angeles College.

Honorable mention for the week was awarded to Kremennaya, Palomar softball player Brie Dunckel, Southwestern softball player Nicole Correa, Grossmont softball player Amanda Izzo and Grossmont's beach volleyball duo of Tina Barrameda and Khalia Jordan.

The Comets' Kremennaya, a freshman from Poway High School, advanced unbeaten through the PCAC tournament until meeting up with Garrido. She swept PCAC team champion Grossmont's Marcela Massaglia, the No. 2 seed, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals, then broke Garrido's serve to take a 1-0 lead in the first game of the first set in the finals before Garrido came back to win the set and then the match.

Dunckel, Palomar's sophomore second baseman out of Valley Center High School and the 2016 PCAC Player of the Year, went 2-for-2 with 3 runs scored, an RBI, 2 walks and a stolen base in a 6-0 non-conference victory over Riverside City College. Dunckel went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, 2 RBIs and a steal in an 11-2 win over College of the Desert. And she beat out a bunt single as the Comets, who lead second-place Southwestern by 2 games in the conference race, defeated Grossmont 6-1. Dunckel is hitting .444 for the season as Palomar's leadoff batter with 5 doubles, 6 triples, 24 steals, a .516 on-base percentage and a .602 slugging percentage. In conference games, she's batting .419 and has 13 steals. The Comets are seeking their 34th conference championship.

Correa, a freshman infielder from Point Loma High School, hit for the cycle in Southwestern's 13-2 run-rule victory over San Diego City College. She singled in the first inning, tripled in the third, doubled in the fourth and homered in the fifth, driving in 6 runs during the game. Correa also went 1-for-3 with a walk in a 4-3 win over San Bernardino Valley and was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as the Jaguars recorded their 25th victory with a 2-0 win over Saddleback. Correa is .505 for the season with 11 doubles, a triple, 5 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .777 slugging percentage. She's hitting .465 in the PCAC with a .721 slugging percentage.

Izzo, a sophomore third baseman from Hemet High School, went 6-for-14 in 5 games during the week, including a home run, double and single for the Griffins against first-place Palomar. For the week, Izzo scored 5 runs, drove in 3 runs, stole 3 bases and had a home run, triple and double. Along with the loss to Palomar, Grossmont defeated San Diego City 10-2 in 5 innings, lost to Mt. San Jacinto 7-3, beat Chaffey 10-2 in 5 innings and lost to Chaffey 7-3.

Barrameda, a freshman from Ramona High School, and Jordan, a sophomore from Olympian High School and a transfer from Cal State Dominguez Hills, went undefeated playing at No. 4 for the Griffins in a pair of 3-2 wins over El Camino College and Long Beach City College. They've helped the defending state champion Griffins to a 17-3 record for the season.
