San Diego Mesa College swimmer Samantha Schmidt and Southwestern softball catcher Megan Malwitz are Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women's Athletes of the Week for April 3-9.

Schmidt, a freshman from University City High School, won two individual events and was part of a winning relay team as the Olympians' swimming and diving team placed second behind host Riverside City College at the Riverside Invitational.

Schmidt won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:51.88 and the 500 freestyle in 5:24.3 and also swam the anchor leg of the Griffins' 400 freestyle relay team. She has the season's fastest Pacific Coast Athletic Conference times in the 400 IM, 500 free (5:17.35) and 200 IM (2:15.80).

The previous week, Schmidt helped Mesa to a 165-118 victory over Palomar as the Olympians finished the conference dual meet season undefeated.

Malwitz, Southwestern's freshman catcher from Grossmont High School, went 9-for-15 for the week as the second-place Jaguars won four of five games, losing only to perennial conference champion and first-place Palomar.

Malwitz went 1-for 3 with an RBI in a 6-3 victory over Imperial Valley. She was 1-for 2 with a walk, RBI and 1 runs scored in an 11-0 run-rule victory over Mt. San Jacinto. Malwitz was 1-for-3 vs. Palomar. She went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in a 5-1 victory over Rio Hondo in the first game of a doubleheader, also throwing a runner out at second base. In the second game of the doubleheader, an 11-1 run-rule win for Grossmont, she went 3-for-4, scored a run and drove in a run.

Honorable mention for the week went to Palomar softball catcher Bailey Romano and Grossmont softball outfielder Katie Schmidt.

Romano, a sophomore from La Costa Canyon High School, singled in a 15-1 run-rule win over San Diego City College and went 3-for-4 with a double as the Comets run-ruled Southwestern for the second time this season, winning 9-1 to take a two-game lead over the Jaguars in the conference race. Then, in back-to-back non-conference losses to state No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Cypress, Romano singled in the first game and slugged a first-inning home run in the second game.

Schmidt, a sophomore out of Valhalla High School, had a 6-for-9 week for Grossmont. In two PCAC games, she went 3-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and five RBIs in a 9-1 run-rule win over Mesa and went 1-for-3 with an RBI in an 8-0 run-rule win over Imperial Valley. In a non-conference loss to Riverside City College, Schmidt was 2-for-3 and scored a run.
