Women’s Basketball begins conference play with a win

San Diego Mesa women’s basketball rang in the new year with an important road conference win against Southwestern College 71-51 on Wednesday.  These early conference games are important because it sets the tone for the rest of the season. Furthermore, last season in the PCAC, three games separated first and third place. 

The team is currently 9-6 overall (1-0 conference) and is riding a two-game win streak after defeating Santa Ana College 52-34 at the PCAC / OEC Holiday Crossover. 

The Olympians were once again led by freshman sensation Gwen Morris - Lundstrom who scored 17 points. Sophomore Keila Teruya turned in 13 points and was a perfect 3-3 from the 3-point line. Coming off the bench, freshman Mackenzie Purnell scored 10 points, 4 rebounds and was 5-7 from the field. On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Bella Terry grabbed a total of 7 rebounds (5 offensive) and 3 blocks. Sophomore Niki Madgedi added 5 assists, 4 points and 3 steals.

The team will host Cuyamaca College on Friday, January 6. Tip off is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start. Both teams will square off again on Friday, January 27 at Mesa College. Last season, the teams split, Mesa defeated Southwestern College 80-49 in Chula Vista. Southwestern then defeated Mesa College at home 78-60.
