Madgedi leads Olympians with 34 points, downs SD City College

San Diego Mesa College women's basketball put together a 71-55 win over San Diego City College on Wednesday improving their record to 14-10 overall, 6-4 in the conference.

Niki Madgedi's season-high 34 points led the way. Madgedi was 11 of 18 from the field and connected on a remarkable 8 of 10 behind the three-point line. "Niki had one of those games last night," states head coach Lindsay Samaniego.  "She was locked in and took advantage of every opportunity she had. She was extremely efficient from the field. It was a lot of fun to watch her success and we are all really happy for her."

Despite losing starting point-guard Keila Teruya in the first minute of the game due to an injury, the Olympians stayed focused and used her absence as a motivation to perform. "It was tough to see one of ours go down like that, we played the rest of the game with her in mind," adds Samaniego. Throughout the season, the characteristic of this team has been 'next woman up.' Gwen Morris-Lundstrom usually leads the team defensively in the press. Bella Terry leads with rebounding. Emma Fitzgerald has not only been solid defensively, but has also started knocking down her shots. Reese Hohenthaner has also shown much improvement since the start of the season. Mackenzie Purnell has also showcased that she is an offensive threat.

The Olympians continue to improve both on defense and offense. Samaniego credits the teams recent efficiency on offense, "we've been inconsistent from the three-point line this season so it was nice to see it come together and show what we are capable of doing." The Olympians were able to convert 15 three-pointers out of 36 attempts. "We put in the work each day in practice and we are seeing the results in the games we've been winning."

With a handful of games left on the schedule, the Olympians aim to be more consistent each night. The coaching staff has increased film study and is relying on this game as a precursor to finish the season strong.
