Women's basketball opens season against Fullerton College

The 2022 women’s basketball campaign begins tonight as SD Mesa College hosts Fullerton College. Tip off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

It is important to come out of the gates strong in this conference. Last season in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, the difference between first and third place came down to 3 games. These early games can, and most of the time, carry huge playoff implications towards the end of the year.

There are many reasons to be excited for the season opener. Not only is it a good time to gauge where the team is currently at, but you can also feel the excitement from the players in being able to finally compete against someone other than your teammates.

The Olympians have four returning players who were named on the PCAC All-Conference team. First team members Niki Madgedi (Del Norte HS), Keila Teruya (Torrey Pines HS), Emma Fitzgerald (Durango HS), and second-team member Gwen Morris-Lundstrom (Mission Bay HS). The coaching staff is expecting these players to lead by example and showcase a team that can create big time scores but also highlight big defensive plays against anyone.

“One of the biggest differences we’ve had this offseason has been the number of returners we have and the leadership they have displayed,” states head coach Lindsay Samaniego. “We have a strong group of freshmen. Just about all of them trained with us this summer and that makes a huge difference in the weight room and on the court. We're looking forward to seeing everything come together tonight. We'll go out there and give our best effort.”

Friendly Reminder:
San Diego Mesa College requires a face mask for all indoor sporting events.
