The women's badminton team is ready to attack the 2025 season with lots of excitement and promise. Building on a strong 10-2 conference record and two impressive wins against DeAnza College, a traditional powerhouse in badminton, this team returns a mix of veteran leadership with talented first year players.
The program's ascent, now being considered as one of the top programs in the county is the result of the exceptional work and dedication by Head Coach June Andrews and Assistant Coach Thai Lay. They have transformed the program from one of having primarily recreational players to a program that brings in the best high school talent in the area.
This season, their goals are clear: to secure the South Coast Conference title and make a deep run in the state championship in May.
Players to Watch:
- Mylene Keophaseut: The team's leader, Mylene, returns as the reigning state consolation singles champion and state doubles champion. Her leadership will be important as she anchors the #1 singles and #1 doubles positions alongside freshman sensation Emily Chindamay.
- Emily Chindamay: A product of University City High School, Emily has already made a splash with her powerful shots, particularly her smashes and clears. "Emily has been a great surprise for the program," says Andrews. "She is passionate and determined to make her mark. She will be a great complement holding the #1 doubles spot with Mylene."
- Christina Nguyen: The reigning CIF Mixed Doubles Champion from Mira Mesa High School, Nguyen, brings a competitive edge and an exceptional all-around game. Her ability to execute both powerful shots and delicate cross-court drops makes her a key asset.
- Marchmilia “Millie” Touch: Team veteran Millie's passion for the sport provide unmeasurable intangibles. Her athleticism and never-give-up attitude are a driving force for the team.
- Tien Nguyen: The sophomore from Patrick Henry High School will hold down the #5 line. "Nguyen has really developed nicely in the off-season, and we expect her to be a very consistent presence," says Andrews. She also anticipates Nguyen contributing at #4 singles and #2 doubles with Christina. "She has a powerful smash and is further developing and getting more consistent at her other shots," Andrews adds. "She is a great team leader with her work ethic and the example she sets."
- Kayli San: Class of 2024 graduate Kayli San brings experience and strategic play. "Kayli is a very experienced player with great strategy," says Andrews. "Our team will need her to be solid at the #6 singles spot and the #3 doubles spot with Tien in order to have a chance to win the South Coast Conference and make it to the state championship in May.
- Camaryn Preston: Freshman Camaryn Preston will anchor the important #7 slot. A natural athlete with a strong tennis background, Preston's 5'10" frame will be a valuable asset. Andrews explains that her tennis experience will help her quickly develop her badminton skills, and her reach will be advantageous for power shots and court coverage.
