The San Diego Mesa College softball team has stormed out of the gate with an umblemished 4-0 record, replicating their start from last season. The Olympians, who finished last year with a 17-8 overall record and a third-place conference finish at 7-5, are looking to build on their fast start.
Today, the Olympians face the Chaffey College Panthers, reigning champions of the Inland Empire Athletic Conference (IEAC) for the past three years. Despite their 0-1 record, with a 7-3 loss to Cerritos College, the Panthers are considered to be one of the top teams in the south.
The Olympians are currently batting .354, with an on-base percentage of .365, and have already launched 3 home runs. In addition, they currently carry a .495 slugging percentage.
At the David Hawk Wilder Memorial Tournament, Mesa started with a 1-0 shutout against Ventura College, followed by a dominant 9-0 victory over Glendale College. The following day, they defeated East Los Angeles College 5-4, and then capped off the perfect weekend with a close 7-6 triumph against Moorpark College.
Arion Neill, the 5'10" sophomore transfer, had a great day at the plate, hitting two home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Chloe Wilson and Braelyn Hill are also playing well, both hitting above .500. Wilson leads the team with a .545 batting average, while Hill is hitting .500.
Olive Anderson boasts a 2.55 ERA along with her 2 wins and 10 strikeouts. Aribella Farrell leads the team with 11 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.11, and also has a win under her belt.
The team welcomes Chaffey Panthers today for a doubleheader. First game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start, followed by the second game at 2:30 p.m.
