Water Polo Team Shows Promise in Rebuilding Year

The San Diego Mesa College men's water polo team finished the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference season in third place (9-12 overall record), an incredible achievement considering the team had difficulties assembling a full roster. Head Coach Scott McCollum, faced with the daunting task, not only was able to field a complete team, but at the same time found athletes who excelled in the sport and received year-end awards.

Four Olympians earned recognition on the PCAC All-Conference team. Santiago Gonzalez and Barrett Satre were named First-Team All-PCAC. Gonzalez, who ranked in the state's top ten in goals and assists, finished the year with an impressive 103 goals, 72 assists, 61 steals, 17 field blocks, and 45 exclusions drawn. Satre also earned a spot in the state's top ten for goals, steals, and field blocks, contributing 96 goals, 58 assists, 66 steals, 26 field blocks, and 46 exclusions drawn.

Johny Dickerson, despite limited playing time, found the back of the net  43 times, had 49 assists, 49 steals, 8 field blocks, and 39 exclusions drawn. Dickerson also finished in the top-ten conference rankings in goals, steals, assists, and exclusions, earning him a place on the PCAC Second-Team All-Conference.

Elliot Goss, new to water polo in 2024, accepted the challenge of playing goalie and quickly excelled. Goss's development and impressive performance compiling 133 saves (second in the conference), 11 assists, and 8 steals, earned him a well-deserved spot on the PCAC All-Second Team.

With a strong core of talented athletes and promising newcomers, the men's water polo team program has a lot to look forward to next season.
