Olympians Face Challenges and Celebrate Growth in 2024 Season

The Olympian men's water polo team faced a unique challenge entering the 2024 season with a roster blending seasoned veterans and first-time players. This difference in experience required the coaching staff to adapt practice sessions to accommodate all skill levels.

Head Coach Scott McCollum acknowledged the challenge, saying, "Practices can be demanding. We have first-year aquatic athletes alongside highly skilled water polo players. They are working hard both in the pool and the classroom. Our beginners are rapidly improving and understanding the complexities of the game. We weren't even sure we'd have a team this fall, so our game schedule is limited.”

The team currently holds a 2-6 overall record, with a 1-1 record in conference play. They recently secured their second win of the season with a decisive 24-6 victory over Crafton Hills College.

Santiago Gonzalez and Barrett Satre have had standout starts to their college water polo careers. Despite playing fewer games than other teams, both athletes are among the state's statistical leaders. In just seven games, Gonzalez has tallied 43 goals, 32 assists, and 19 steals, while Satre has contributed 33 goals, 25 assists, and 17 steals. Their stats place them among the conference and state leaders in multiple categories.

Comparing the Olympians to other programs is difficult due to the team's unique blend of experience. The coaching staff emphasizes effort, teamwork, and a positive environment. McCollum added, "Losing isn't fun, but it's not the sole measure of our success. I'm confident that the team will continue to improve and secure more wins."

The Olympians' next game is a conference battle against Miramar College on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024, at Miramar College, with a scheduled start time of 5:00 PM.
