After an impressive 21-5 overall record and an 8-1 standing in Pacific Coast conference play last season, the San Diego Mesa College men's volleyball team narrowly missed hoisting the title, finishing second in the state. Champing at the bit, the team is hungry to start the chase for the elusive state crown.
The season is off to a great start with a solid 3-1 victory (25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19) against Long Beach City College inside the Hall of Champions.
The critical first set saw both teams trading points until they were tied at 16-16. Mesa College then pulled away with a 9-4 run to take the first set 25-20.
Long Beach City responded in the second set, narrowly winning 25-22. Mesa struggled with their serves, committing 6 errors.
With the match tied at one set apiece, the coaching staff rallied the players, telling them to stay focused and execute the game plan. The team responded. They battled to 25-23 win in the third set and carried that momentum into the fourth, closing out the match with a 25-19 win.
Head Coach David Proffitt highlighted the performance of Trevor Clark. The 6'9" sophomore from Lake Elsinore, California, delivered with 32 kills on 67 attempts (.418) while contributing 12 digs and 2 solo blocks.
Logan Shepard led the team with 41 assists, while Ryan Koser contributed 11 digs. Freshman Mattias Mendis from Jesuit High School was error-free in the middle, recording 5 kills on 10 attempts.
The Olympians will host Santa Monica College for their season opener on Friday, January 31. First serve is scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
