Playoff Volleyball: Olympians to host Irvine Valley College

The San Diego Mesa College men's volleyball team ranked #3, is set to host a 3C2A regional playoff game tonight against Irvine Valley College, ranked #6. Under the leadership of head coach David Proffitt, the team has achieved remarkable success, transforming from a team with only two wins in two years to a consistent force in the state. This is the program’s third consecutive playoff appearance.

The Olympians face a formidable and familiar opponent in Irvine Valley College, who they previously beat 3-0 in a closely contested match, with set scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-22. Coach Proffitt acknowledges the toughness of IVC, stating, "They are a jump serving and attacking team. Not only are they well-coached, but they will put up a tough fight tonight." Proffitt points out that in the championship rounds, there are no easy games. All eight teams in the tournament are strong; any team can win on any night.

The team had a solid week of practice, sticking to their routine and doing what they do best. The sessions have been intense and competitive, preparing them for tonight. While there may be some nerves at the start, he expects them to fade away. The mix of experienced players and first-year talents who have played in high-stakes matches in high school is reassuring.

The winner of tonight's match will advance to the semifinals against either Moorpark College (ranked #7) or Golden West College (ranked #2) on Thursday, April 25.
