Olympians Fall Short in High-Scoring Battle Against #2 Riverside City College

Head coach Gary Watkins knew the challenge his football team would face against the #2 ranked Riverside City College Tigers on Saturday.

Despite the 62-41 loss, the Olympians fought and competed till the very end. However, the Tigers' undefeated conference record (6-0) and 8-1 overall season was too good on this day. Each time the Olympians made a move, the Tigers would immediate respond.

The Olympians put together 345 total yards. Quarterback Jax Leatherwood threw for 286 yards and five touchdowns, completing 30 of 49 passes. Dazure Paggett and Conor Lawlor each found the end zone twice, while Jalil Tucker added another touchdown reception. Troy Bassler led the team in receiving with 91 yards.

The Tigers held a 28-13 lead at halftime, but the Olympians rallied in the third quarter. A 13-play, 74-yard drive culminated in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Leatherwood to Tucker, bringing the Olympians within one possession.

However, the Tigers responded, again, with a quick score, extending their lead to 34-20. The game then turned into a back-and-forth shootout.

Mesa's Aleonte Logan provided a spark with an incredible 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, making the score 27-34.

The Tigers' high-powered offense, led by quarterback Brady Jones, proved too much for the Olympians to overcome. Riverside scored on back-to-back drives, taking a commanding 48-27 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Olympians refused to give up, scoring two more touchdowns, but the deficit was too large to overcome. The final score was 62-41.

Jayden Cortell led the Olympians' defense with 12 total tackles, while Cooper Mau contributed 7 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.
