The Olympian football team suffered its first loss of the season with a 28-7 defeat to Golden West College on Saturday. As expected, the Rustlers played tough, Mesa must now regroup and refocus immediately before facing their next opponent.

"Golden West College is a top 3 team in the SFCA, we just didn't play to our standards, and we can't let that happen again," states head coach Gary Watkins. "We made a few uncharacteristic errors and they cost us a chance to compete. When we play against championship caliber teams, we have to be focused the entire time."

The team must get back to the basics and focus on fundamentals. They need to get back to executing the Olympian style of football which allowed them a 3-0 start into the season. Watkins adds, "you have to perform at an elite level every week in the SCFA. You can't take your foot off the gas because everyone wants to win so we have to execute every time."

The Olympians will be traveling to Grossmont College to take on the Griffins on Saturday. The Griffins are currently 0-3 and looking to rebound after a 36-15 loss to Citrus College.

Both teams haven't faced each other in four years and Watkins expects a backyard brawl. Besides the proximity of both schools from each other, some players were high school teammates, and both programs recruited from the same pool. "Games like this against neighboring schools mean a little bit more,' adds Watkins. "We have to get back to Olympians football this week, I reminded everyone, we have to compete for four quarters."
