Baseball downs Mt. San Jacinto College

The San Diego Mesa College baseball team got back into the win column by defeating Mt. San Jacinto College 4-2 on Thursday. 

The Olympians snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 16-9-1 and is now at the top of the conference with an 11-3 record. 

The squad was able to take advantage of key errors by the Eagles in the 3rd and 5th inning.  At the beginning of the 3rd, Victor Ceniceros started the inning with a hard single to center field. Cyrus Fullen was able to reach first base after a sacrifice bunt turned into an error by the first baseman, advancing Ceniceros to second. After a wild pitch, which advanced both Ceniceros and Fullen, Dominick Buso walked loading the bases. Kevin Van Linge, hitting .318, continues his solid play by hitting a single to right field scoring Ceniceros to take a 1-0 lead. Isidro Velez immediately followed with a single, scoring Fullen for a 2 run, 3 hit inning. 

At the top of the 5th inning, the Olympians once again took advantage of a key error. After back to back singles from Dominick Buso and Kevin Van Linge, Mt. San Jacinto threw a wild pitch advancing Buso and Van Linge to 2nd and 3rd base. Isidro Velez reached first base after an error by the third baseman, which allowed Buso to score from 3rd base. Joel Escalante then grounded out to the pitcher allowing Kevin Van Linge to score for another 2 run and 2 hit inning. 

The pitching staff, led by freshman Kobby Lopez, performed well on the mound. Lopez is currently a top the PCAC with a 0.71 ERA and 5 wins. Not to be outdone, Dominick Buso is also atop the rankings with 11 stolen bases. Isidro Velez is second in the conference with 21 runs batted in. 

The team will be back on the field for a rubber match against Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday, March 30th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
