SD Mesa's Camacho-Bier, McBride share AOTW honors

Two San Diego Mesa College products, soccer player Natasha Camacho-Bier and volleyball player Justine McBride, have been honored as Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women's Athletes of the Week for Sept. 25-Oct. 1.

Natasha Camacho-Bier, a sophomore midfielder out of Point Loma High School and a transfer from NCAA Division II Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York, scored the second goal of the game to help  the Olympians put distance between themselves and the Coyotes early in a 9-0 win..

She came back later in the week to score the only goal of the game in the 88th minute in Mesa's 1-0 victory over San Diego City College. The wins allowed the Olympians to advance to 4-3-1 on the season and 3-1 in the South Division.

Justine McBride, an opposite sophomore for Calvary Christian in Vista, stepped up huge for Mesa as the Olympians outlasted Ventura in a 2-hour, 30-minute marathon 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12.

She was a powerful presence at the net with 21 kills, a .486 percentage and a 56.8 percentage.  

 

HONORABLE MENTION

Alyssa Dincoff (San Diego City College Volleyball), a sophomore outside hitter and setter who arrived at City College when she was a freshman as a home-schooled player from Fort Wayne, Indiana, again was the Knights' "go-to" player, this time in two PCAC crossover wins. She had 13 kills and 23 digs in a 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-6 win over Mt. San Jacinto, then the following day totaled 6 kills, 18 errors and 18 digs in a 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 victory over College of the Desert. City College's team MVP as a freshman, she leads the state in aces this season and is averaging 1.2 per match. Her high in a match has been 10 aces vs. Rio Hondo. She's a major reason the Knights are 11-1 to begin the season.

Hannah Lopez (Palomar Cross Country), the Comets' No. 1 runner as a freshman from Frontier High School in Bakersfield. Lopez ran to a third-place finish in the Coach Downey XC Classic on Saturday, behind winner Destiny Diaz from Long Beach City College. Lopez ran the 5-kilometer course in 21:10.

Karen Jacobs (San Bernardino Valley Soccer), a freshman forward form Redlands High School, helped lead the Wolverines to back-to-back victories over San Diego Miramar 3-0 with two goals and MiraCosta 1-0. San Bernardino is 8-1 on the season and leads the PCAC North Division with a 4-0 record.

Sara Connel, San Diego City College Volleyball), the Knights' sophomore setter from Clairemont High School, recorded 33 assists in a 6-2 rotation withy five service aces in the victory over Ventura.

Morgan Schaaf (Mt. San Jacinto Soccer), a sophomore midfielder form Chaparral High School in Temecula, contributed an assist and the winning goal in a 2-1 win over College of the Desert as the Eagles completed a 2-0 week in the PCAC North Division. Mt. San Jac also defeated Palomar 2-0 to knock the Comets out of a first-place tie with San Bernardino Valley.
