Women's Water Polo Off to a Strong Start

Women's Water Polo Off to a Strong Start

After finishing with a 15-9 record, and placing second in the conference last season, the San Diego Mesa College women’s water polo team is once again ready to compete for the title.  The team kickstarted their campaign last week at the Cypress Invitational, going 3-0.

Lucie Kaskoun led the Olympians in scoring with 10 goals and 4 assists. Sophomore Kassidy Hirzel scored 5 goals and 4 assists. Freshman Brianne Hill (Chula Vista, CA / Eastlake HS) turned in 3 goals and 2 assists. Mave Richardson, Amelia Armstong, Braelyn Hill, and Payge Miller all contributed with 2 goals over the weekend. Second year goalie Alex Lapikova recorded 15 saves and 6 steals.

“It’s exciting to start the season undefeated, especially when we face opponents from strong conferences,” states head coach Beto Vasquez.  “Even though we have a smaller roster compared to last year, the ladies and coaching staff have high expectations for this team.”

The team will be back in the pool on Friday, September 8, competing in the Palomar Mini Tournament at Grossmont College. Although the games do not count towards the conference record, it’s a first glimpse against conference foes that the team uses for scouting purposes later on in the year.
