Mesa women's water polo wins State Championship

Overcoming another early game deficit, the #2 seed San Diego Mesa women's water polo team captured it's first State Championship with a 9-7 win over #1 seed Riverside. Falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, the Olympians scored 2 goals in the last 30 seconds of the first quarter to get within 1 at 3-2.  The Olympians went on a 4-1 run in the second quarter to lead 6-4 at half. Jaicey Tyler scored twice, Ellie Williams and Bailey Wickliffe each had one. Riverside scored the only goal in the third quarter to draw within one at 6-5. In the fourth quarter Lilli Lindgard scored an early goal to push the lead back to 2. Riverside's Citlali Salazar cut the lead with a goal but Cassie Bernas scored her second goal of the game on the next possession in what turned out to be the game winner to push the lead back to 2. Bailey Wickliffe scored her third goal to give Mesa a 3 goal lead and secure the win. Riverside was able to score only one more as Madi Atkins turned away 3 final attempts as the whole team joined her in the pool for the celebration.
