Women's basketball takes out #8 ranked Palomar College

The San Diego Mesa College women's basketball team has taken gigantic strides under head coach Lindsay Samaniego. On Wednesday, the Olympians took one of their most impressive one yet. 

Palomar College came into Mesa College ranked #8 in the state, 17-4 overall, and undefeated in the conference at 4-0. As a matter of fact, the Comets have won 35 straight conference games. Their last loss was before the start of the pandemic, falling to Mira Costa College in 2020. Led by freshman sensation Alethze Marquez, the Olympians defeated Palomar College 62 - 59. Marquez finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds (8 offensive). Kendal Alloway contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. 

The team is two wins short of matching last year's 17-12 overall record. Currently at 15-7 overall (5-1 conference), strong rebounding has been one of the biggest contributors to this year's success. San Diego Mesa College is ranked #6 in the state in offensive rebounding with 16.1 per game. Against Palomar College, the Olympians out rebounded the Comets 50-27. Freshman Kendal Alloway not only leads the team in points per game at 13.4, she leads the team in rebounds with a 9.1 average. 

Next up for the Olympians will be another conference match against Southwestern College. The team will travel south to Chula Vista to take on the Jaguars on Friday, February 2, 2024.
