Men's water polo looks to turn things around at the 46th Annual San Diego Men’s Water Polo Invitational

The 46th Annual San Diego Men’s Water Polo Invitational begins today. Mesa College will host Cerritos College, Arizona State University Club and the UCSD Club water polo teams.

The men’s team is coming off of two difficult losses at the Cypress College Mini and look to rebound early this morning at 9AM against Cerritos College. They will then square off against UCSD at 1030AM and finish the day against Arizona State at 430PM.

Although the team is currently at 1-3, there is plenty of time to make a run in the PCAC conference. Head coach Beto Vazquez is still learning about his team that consists of 12 first year players out of 14. “We are a young team and have the talent and energy to compete,’ states Vazquez. “Our strength, stamina, and will to win will be our key for a successful season.”

Competing against four-year programs is important because it provides the players a way to measure themselves against stronger competition. The first scrimmage of the year was against the University of Redlands. Not only was it an opportunity to travel out of San Diego, but also provided a chance to visit SD Mesa alumni Jake Rose who is currently the starting center forward for the Bulldogs. “ It’s important that our athletes know and understand that they could also become part of a 4-year program, and who better to share that experience than an alumni,” adds Vazquez.
