Mesa alumni, Medhane Woldu, qualifies for Olympic Trials

San Diego Mesa College alumni Medhane Woldu qualifies for the USA Marathon Olympic Trials. Woldu, running in his first marathon,  placed 18th at the California International Marathon held in Sacramento, California on Sunday, December 3, running 2:17.18, a 5:14 pace per mile. The Olympic qualifying standard is set at 2:18.0. 

Woldu graduated from Crawford High School (2018) and attended SD Mesa College from 2018-2020. A member of the 2019 state championship team, Medhane also earned all-american honors after placing 13th in the race. Medhane transferred to Stanislaus State (2020-2023) and competed for both the cross country and track and field team. He graduated with a degree in accounting. 

San Diego Mesa College head coach Sean Ricketts states, "we are proud of Medhane and all of his accomplishments.  He represents the "Mesa Way" and is an example of what our athletics program and college is all about, which is providing opportunities with equity and excellence. 

The marathon Olympic Trials will be held on February 3, 2024 in Orlando, Florida.
