Back-to-Back to Back-to-Back, SD Mesa College wins 2023 conference championships

Back-to-Back to Back-to-Back, SD Mesa College wins 2023 conference championships

The San Diego Mesa College women’s track and field team defended their conference crown scoring 328 points to secure back-to-back Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Champions. The Olympians simply dominated, having won 15 out of 21 individual events. SD Mesa College was followed by Palomar College with 154 points, San Bernardino Valley College with 35 points, Southwestern College with 20 points, and Cuyamaca College with 8 points.

The 4x100 relay team of Carli Nosler, Bella Bratton, Kayla Leitner, and Charly Overton had a breakthrough performance, having turned in a time of 49.18.

It was another banner day for the men’s track and field team. The program captured their fourth consecutive Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship, like the women’s program, in dominating fashion. Of the 21 individual events, the Olympians captured the top spot in 18. Overall, they were able to score 427 total points. Southwestern College finished in second place with 64 points, Cuyamaca College with 63, and San Bernardino Valley College with 17.

Both Tytan Taylor and Alan Malo had breakthrough performances. Taylor jumped 1.93m 6'4, Long Jump 6.98m 22'11, and Malo finished the 800m in 1:55.26.

Head coach Sean Ricketts describes that both programs are in what he calls, ‘the championship phase’ of the season. Ricketts believes that the team has connected and continues to work, even with the recent success. With several athletes citing top state performances in their events and State A marks, both programs are peaking at the right time and should be a force once state championships come around.

Both teams will have an opportunity to compete at home as San Diego Mesa College will host the 2023 SoCal Regionals Prelims on Friday, May 5, 2023 and the SoCal Regional Finals on Friday, May 12, 2023.
