Basketball upsets #21 Riverside City College

The San Diego Mesa College basketball team scored a big upset on Friday night as the Olympians beat 21st ranked Riverside City College 83-80 in double overtime.

Steve Stinson led the team with 19 points. Quajon Young contributed 14 points. Hangasu Noor was perfect behind the 3 point line going 3 for 3 and finished with 13 points. On the defensive side of the ball, Chanel Mballa collected a team high 11 rebounds.

"Steve is our floor general and is one of the toughest players we have had at Mesa," states head coach Travis Nichols. "This was a small glimpse of what he can do and we expect him to continue throughout the year."

After dropping the season opener to Chaffey College 67-88, followed by a win against Victor Valley College on Monday, the coaching staff emphasized to stick to the game plan and trust each other. According to Nichols, trusting each other, especially in tough situations, is the key to this team having success.

The win against the 21st ranked team in the state will provide the Olympians a boost of confidence heading into their next couple of games. Although the win is important and should be celebrated, Nichols reminds the team that they can't boast too much. "The win will let other teams know that Mesa is here,' adds Nichols. "If we play our game, I truly believe we will be hard to beat. We have to take it game by game, do our best, and stay humble."

NEXT GAME:
Mesa will travel to take on LA Harbor College on Monday, November 13th. Game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
