Keeping the Momentum: Men's Basketball continues win streak

Daron Traylor's drive and corner jump shot with 3 seconds remaining on the clock was enough to see the Olympians push their winning streak to four games in a key conference battle against Palomar College on Friday.

In a game that saw nine lead changes and 6 ties, this set up as a game that would be determined by who had the last possession. Tied at 89 in the second half with 3 seconds remaining, Daron Traylor received the inbound pass, drove towards the baseline, pulled up, and converted a  jump shot giving the Olympians the 91-89 victory.

Before the final play, head coach Travis Nichols called a timeout. In the huddle, he reminded the team to calm down and wanted to make sure the right personnel were in for the game. He also stressed that depending on what happens with the play, be ready to play defense.

"Daron has been clutch all year and we wanted to get him the ball," states Nichols. "Assistant Coach Talib Mahdi drew up the play and they executed flawlessly. I sat back and watched. When you have great assistant coaches like we have in Talib, and when he has an idea that he thinks will work, you have to trust them. I had full confidence in my staff and it was right design."

The Olympians were led by Steve Stinson who scored 27 points for the second time this season. Stinson finished with 27 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist, and was 7-9 from the free-throw line. Daron Taylor turned in 19 points, 2 steals, 9 rebounds, and was 3-7 from the three-point line. Javen Woodall had 18 points, 2 steals, 3 rebounds, and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Hans Noor also stepped up for the Olympians coming up with important rebounds and free throws late in the game.

The team is scheduled to take on Southwestern College on Wednesday, February 15 at Mesa College. The coaching staff stresses the need to stay ready. "We have to mentally stay focused throughout the game, especially down the stretch," adds Nichols. When we start playing pick-up basketball, we start losing our identity and bad things happen. When we stick to the game plan we are hard to beat."
