Olympians winning with vets guiding young stars

The women’s beach volleyball team is once again dominating play. The Olympians are currently undefeated with a 6-0 record having only dropped three sets this season. The combination of a strong recruiting class, along with veteran leadership, is showing that this team has all the potential to make a long run into this year's title chase.

Head coach Kim Lester explains the team's focus early has been very impressive. Furthermore, the desire to work and learn every day has been welcomed and shows this team has something to prove. “I am impressed with how self-sufficient this team has been, as well as the composure they have on the court,” adds Lester. They are executing our strategy, and most importantly, they are having fun doing it.”

Before the start of the season, Lester explained that playing as a team and buying into the program is one of the most important factors that needs to improve. “We are all playing loose,” adds Lester. “We have a next ball mentality, and we are always working to better communication and first touch.”

Six of the ten pairs that have seen competition are first-year players and have made an immediate impact. Kailyn Jager and Myah Gomez have shown to be a strong duo and will be tough to beat. Both possess high beach IQ, are physical, and ultra-competitive. Amiana Lagrimas is an offensive threat who is lightning-quick and can jump. A true beach volleyball player, she has both the power and creativity to win points in various ways.

Maria Coronado, Jaiden Mojica, and Madison Daniels have impressed with how fast they are learning the game. Rita Nua, Aubrey Villanueva, Jaelyn Douglas, and Macy Thornburg have been instrumental in rounding out our lineup at the six and seven slots. Lester explains that having depth across the board is important, considering the injuries and other health issues that seem to arise with a long season.
