Beach Volleyball Women Are a Success

From in-door to sand, the San Diego Mesa College women's volleyball women find success at the beach.

Last fall saw the indoor women with a conference record of 7-3, and an overall record of 15-12. During fall 2016, the women held a cumulative team GPA of 3.11.

In spring, the indoor ladies trained on sand. The beach volleyball team finished with a conference record of 7-6, and an overall record of 11-12.

May 6th, 2017 saw the CCCAA beach volleyball state championships. The championships concluded with San Diego Mesa's #1 duo placing 3rd in the state's individual team bracket. Flavia Virgili and Kat Wright held the 1st team position at SD Mesa, placing 5th in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) and now 3rd in state. Virgili and Wright are 1st team All-PCAC.

"Sand volleyball is the fastest growing sport in the NCAA," states Kim Lester, Head Coach of the sand volleyball team at San Diego Mesa College.

Flavia Virgili has scholarship offers from Colorado State University Pueblo, California State San Bernardino, Clemson University and University of North Florida. Kat Wright is deciding between offers from California Polytechnic State University and University of San Francisco.

Sand volleyball's additional graduating sophomores have already accepted scholarships earlier in spring to play indoor volleyball. Isabel Miller, Michelle Mercado, Olivia Tomlin and Victoria Dahlberg will transfer into Arizona State University, San Diego Christian College, Briar Cliff University and Friends University, respectively, on full-ride scholarships.

Behind the beach volleyball program stands the college's biggest fans: President Pamela T. Luster, Vice President Tim McGrath, Administrative Services Vice President Rachelle Agatha and Athletics Dean Kevin Hazlett.
