As the saying goes, anyone can be beaten at any given moment. The San Diego Mesa College women’s badminton team fulfilled that sentiment last Thursday by upsetting back-to-back state champions DeAnza College 14-7 in Cupertino, California.

After finishing 8-2 in the South Coast Conference last season, second behind Pasadena City College, the San Diego Mesa College women’s badminton team will rely on the progression of first-year players and lean on veterans for a successful season.

Sophomore Erica Garcia Badaracco and freshman Megan Nguyen picked a great time to play their best badminton of the year. The Olympian duo defeated Ha Tuyet Nguyen and Ella Trinh of Evergreen Valley College in an exhilarating three set match, 21-18, 11-21, 21-16, to take the 2023 3C2A state doubles championship title.
