Softball Defeats San Bernardino Valley College 6-5 in Play-In Game, Advances to Playoffs

It's been a season of late-inning drama and walk-off winners for the #15 San Diego Mesa College softball team, yesterday's play-in game against #18 San Bernardino Valley College tops the list.

Down 2-4 going into the bottom of the 4th inning, Arianna Salazar started the rally with a walk to first base. Hannah Anderson followed with a sacrifice, allowing Salazar to advance to second base. Carissa Topolinski, the sophomore from Gurnee, Illinois, added another RBI to her tally after singling to bring home Salazar to cut the lead 3-4. With the momentum clearly swinging in favor of the Olympians, Ambria Guye connects on a solo home run to even the game at 4-4. Immediately after, Jolene Giles connects on another home run to give the Olympians a 5-4 lead.

The Wolverines answered right back the next inning after Hannah Guilfoos doubled and then Kaitlyn LaFleur reached first base on an error, which allowed Guilfoos to score, to even the game at 5-5.

Heading into the last two frames, this game would be determined by the team that would take advantage of any opportunities presented. After a double by Hannah Anderson, she then advanced to third base after a passed ball.  The Olympians saw the go ahead run standing on third-base. Ambria Guye, who's had a tendency to come up clutch all year, connected on the biggest hit of the game, hitting a double that allowed Anderson to put Mesa up 6-5, which was all the team needed to advance into the next round.

The team will travel to Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California on Friday, May 5. The Mountie's, seeded #2, was 35-5 overall and 23-1 in the conference.
