Men's volleyball to host first round playoff game against Santa Barbara City College

The San Diego Mesa men's volleyball team (17-5, 7-2 PCAC) took care of business, winning their last two games of the season without dropping a set. On Wednesday, the Olympians traveled to Palomar College and defeated the Comets 25-13, 26-24, 25-22.  They followed the excellent performance with another sweep of Grossmont College 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 on Friday.

The Olympians finish the season in second place in the conference, behind Miramar College, and have qualified as the #4 seed in the 2023 CCCAA Men's Volleyball Championships. Mesa College will host #5 seed Santa Barbara City College on Friday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m.

This will be the second time Mesa and Santa Barbara City College face off. In February, the Vaqueros were able to sweep the Olympians 3-0 (14-25, 21-25, 18-25). Santa Barbara City College is a well coached team with a lot of high IQ volleyball players. They have players that also play beach volleyball, so they are well versed in hitting off-speed shots. They have the ability to attack the entire court with line attacks, angle swings, and off speed shots to the middle of the court. They also have one of the top setters in college and bring with them a strong defensive team. The Vaqueros concluded the regular season with an 11-6 overall record and was 8-4 in Western State Conference, finishing 3rd behind Long Beach and Moorpark.

The team is confident heading into the playoffs. With injuries to a minimum, the team is looking to ride their momentum on Friday. "I think that we are playing great going into playoffs," states head coach David Proffitt. "When you ask if we are peaking, my answer is that as well as we are playing lately this team has the ability to get hotter. I think we have another gear. The guys are really excited for the chance to play at home for our first match, so I hope that translates into a high level of play. "

A word that has been used throughout the season is intensity. When the team plays with fire, and stays away from momentum shifts, they are hard to beat. The coaching staff will continue to prepare the way they have all year long. This point in the season, it's all about preparing each player both mentally and physically.

Once the draw has been set, all wins and loss records are thrown out the window. Not one player will be able to carry this team to victory, it must be a complete team effort. "If someone is not playing well, then the rest of the guys will just have to pick him up," adds Proffitt. "You can't win matches against great opponents with just one or two stand out players. It must be a team effort in order to get the win."
