Men's swim and dive look to improve last years finish

The San Diego Mesa College men’s swim and dive team finished 4th at last year's conference championship. Head coach Michael Murrad enters his second season at the helm and is eager for the season to start.

“We had a relatively small team last year and struggled against some of the larger programs in the conference,” states Murad. “Despite some of our challenges, we have been able to create a great culture, one that has carried into this season and we now have a full roster. Our team has done a fantastic job embracing the goals we set for them and we’re eager to get back on top.”

Sophomore Ty Hunt will lead the program and look to improve his impressive 2nd place finish at the year-end state championships. “Despite all his success he is eager to improve on last year's result,” adds Murad. What makes Ty even more impressive is that he goes above and beyond what we’ve asked from him. He’s a person that not only leads by example, but someone that also guides and mentors his teammates. He has played an integral part in assisting to rebuild our program.”

A freshman to keep an eye on is Zach Gonzalez. A native of Texas, Gonzalez will make an immediate impact in the conference and possibly be one of the top breaststrokers and freestylers in the state. His performances during practice has already elevated team performance.

The coaching staff has done a great job putting this team together. It would be to no surprise that the aquatics program improves on their finish from last season. “As a coach you always have performance related goals for the team and individual athletes,” adds Murad. “That said, our focus this year is based more on culture and embracing the challenges that come with being a student-athlete. We want our team to rise above obstacles whether that comes at a swim meet or in the locker room. If every swimmer feels like they have the team as their support system, the season will be a success and performance will follow.”
