WVB Regular Season Recap 2016

During a tough 6-8 preseason the Lady Olympians were able to capture key wins vs #15 Bakersfield and #16 Moorpark despite suffering a season ending knee injury to starting outside hitter Madison Holland in the first match of the year.  5 of the 8 preseason loesses came to the formidable opponents who are ranked in the top 25 of the CCCWVCA State Women's volleyball rankings.

#2 Pierce

#8 El Camino

#11 Gavilan

#13 Canyons

#18 Butte

#22 Long Beach

conference play began with an intense match vs arch rival, Grossmont.  Mesa fought hard in the first two sets 23-25 and 29-31 but eventually fell to the Griffins in 3 sets. Mesa would win four straight conference matches before they would again challenge the number one ranked team in the state.  The second meeting vs Grossmont was another heated battle between the conference rivals.  The Olympians lost a very tight game, but not before taking a set off of them to start the match.  The olympians finished with a conference record of 7-3 and overall record of 13-11.

THe last two matches the regular season were by fat the most exciting as the Olympians would claim victory and go five sets in both of their PCAC crossover matches.  The first crossover vs #6 MiraCosta was an absolute barn burner.  Mesa was bale to win in 5 sets and 21-19 in the 5th and deciding set.  The second crossover would be much like th first with another 5 set match at home vs MSJC.  The Olympians would pull out another win with a very close 15-13 score in the deciding set.  Izzy Miller and Tori Dalhberg would lead the change for MEsa in both matches, Izzy with 39 kills and Tori with 36 kills over the last two matches.  Izzy Miller was also named to the All Region Team for her outstanding play this season.  Izzy was 3rd in the state in total kills with 459 kills on the season and 4th in the state in kills per set with 4.94 per set.

The Olympians will now move on to the 2016 CCCAA Women's Volleyball SoCal REgional Championship.  There are seeded 10th out of 18 teams and will play their first match vs #7 Golden West on Tuesday the 22nd of November.
