Jim Fegan has been part of the coaching staff at San Diego Mesa College since 1995. Currently the head coach for the women’s water polo and swimming and diving teams, he spent the first 7 years leading both the men’s and women’s programs.  Under his direction, the San Diego Mesa College Aquatic program has developed into the most successful in San Diego and one of the best in the state, both academically and athletically.

His Mesa water polo teams have won 12 conference championships, qualified for the Southern California Championships 15 times and concluded this season winning the team’s first State Championship. Coach Fegan has been honored as conference Coach-of-the-Year 11 times. He was named State Coach of the Year in 2015.

His 2006 conference championship women’s team was also honored with the prestigious COA Athletic Scholar Team award, signifying the team with the highest GPA in the state. 

The Mesa swimming and diving teams have been equally as successful. In the past seven years the Mesa women’s swimming and diving teams have won 6 conference championships and finished as high as 4th at the State Championships.

During his tenure, Mesa has had 17 All-American water polo players and 62 swimming All-Americans as well as 5 state champions and 21 school record holders.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Coach Fegan is a full-time Professor in the Exercise Science department where he teaches health education, exercise science and activity classes.
