Women's soccer opens fall season with draw

The Mesa College women's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 2-2 draw against Orange Coast College at the BK Classic.

"We came out strong at the start of the game, but we just could not convert," states head coach Todd Curran. "We also had some shaky moments in the first half that needs some adjusting. Overall, I was pleased with our defense and how our goalkeeper (Lillian Hill) played."

The start of the second half began with a goal in the first minute by Nikki Miranda. Miranda received a through ball from Madison Cosgrove, outran the defense, and slid the ball past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. Mesa's lead did not last long. Ten minutes later, OCC scored bringing the game to a 1-1 tie.

With twenty minutes remaining in the second half, Mesa was awarded a corner kick (6th of the day). Kenya Dantu put a perfect ball to the back post where Brianna Gonzales hit a beautiful header, giving Mesa a  2-1 lead.

With only eight minutes remaining in regulation, Mesa could not contain OCC's #10 as she once again scored equalizing the game at 2-2.

The Olympians return to action on Friday, August 31, when they are scheduled to play against Las Positas College.
