Mesa's Makhmudyautsev, G-House's Bostedt honored
The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has selected San Diego Mesa College swimmer Alexander Makhmudyantsev and Grossmont baseball player Robert Bostedt as Men's Athletes of the Week for February 27 through March 5.
Makhmudyautsev, a freshman from Antelope High School in Northern California, sparked the Olympians to 1-2-3-4 finishes in two events by winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.66 as the Olympians overwhelmed host Grossmont 233-61.
Mukhmudyautsev also won the 100 individual medley with a 2:08.53 time and opened up a huge lead swimming the breaststroke in the 200 medley relay which Mesa won. The Olympians remained unbeaten in conference dual swimming & diving meets over the last three seasons by capturing wins in 15 of 16 swimming events.
Bostedt went 9-for-14 with a home run, 2 doubles, 3 steals and 3 RBIs as Grossmont opened defense of its 2016 conference baseball championship with 3 straight wins (6-2, 3-1 and 14-5) over San Bernardino Valley.
In Saturday's final game of the series, Bostedt went 5-for-6 with a homer, double and 3 singles to up his batting average to .379 on the season.
Honorable mention was awarded to Palomar baseball pitcher Ryan Semon, San Diego Miramar volleyball player Levi Vermeulen and Palomar tennis player Peter Trhac.
Semon, a red-shirt freshman left-hander out of Ramona High School, came in to begin the second inning and pitched 4 innings of 2-hit, scoreless ball as the Comets defeated Mt. San Jacinto 12-0. With the win, Semon advanced to 4-0 on the season, with all the wins coming out of the bullpen. He owns an ERA of 0.40, third-lowest in the state, over 23 1/3 innings. Palomar swept 3 games from the Eagles to open conference play and is 11-5 on the season.
Vermeulen, a red-shirt sophomore outside hitter out of Ramona High, had a strong week as the Jets rapped up non-conference play before opening the PCAC season. He racked up 15 kills with a .428 hitting percentage and added 2 aces and 3 digs in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to state No. 1-ranked Irvine Valley. Vermeulen followed that effort with 15 kills, 3 blocks and 4 digs in the
Jets' 3-1 win over Santiago Canyon. He ranks eighth in the state with 90 kills and leads a Miramar team that has already logged 4 wins in 20176, surpassing the 2 wins earned in the program's first 2 seasons. He also has a 3.48 grade-point average as a social & behavioral sciences major.
Palomar's Trhac, a sophomore out of Del Norte High School and the returning PCAC Player of the Year and conference singles champion who also made up one-half of the 2016 PCAC championship doubles team, had another big day in the second-place Comets' 8-1 victory over Mt. San Jacinto. He defeated the Eagles' Edward Mora 6-1, 6-0 in No. l singles and teamed with Kyle Lee to beat Mora and Ashton Vega 8-1 in No. 1 doubles.
