A season that already included the breaking of 5 school records and 8 conference meet records added some new accomplishments over the weekend that top them all. At the California Community College Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at East LA College May 5-7, Freshman Brandon Crabtree and Sophomore Neil Franka each smashed two long standing state meet records on their way to state titles in the 100 Fly and 200 IM. Franka's 200 IM time of 1:47.36 also set a national community college mark and stands as the fastest ever swum by a community college student-athlete in the country. The result earned Franka the Performance of the Meet award. In a race that pinnned two of Mesa's best next to each other for the 100 fly finals, Crabtree and Franka both came in under the former 15 year old state record time of 48.15. Crabtree came away with the win at a blazing 47.95, while Franka's late race surge finished with an amazing 48.10. They may be the first duo from the same school to finish under a state record in the same finals event.
Brandon Crabtree claimed the top individual prize of the championships, being named Swimmer of the Meet. He was the only Male swimmer to win each of his individual events (50 Free 20.09, 100 Fly 47.95, 100 Free 44.12).
The first event of the day set the tone for the meet, as the Mesa 200 Freestyle Relay team of Franka, Chris Evangelista, Pablo Zapata and Crabtree obliterated the school record in a time of 1:24.13.
Mesa finised the meet in 5th, outscoring 6th place powerhouse Diablo Valley College by 11 points. In all, San Diego Mesa swimmers set 1 national, 2 state, and 10 school records over the weekend.
