Men's basketball participates in domestic violence awareness month

The San Diego Mesa College Men's Basketball team recently participated in the Domestic Violence Awareness Month kick-off event held at the San Diego Central Library.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which first began in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence is a day of unity to connect battered women’s advocates across the country.

The event included speeches from dignitaries, survivors, and youth presentations. The athletes participated in reading of names and placed down flowers in remembrance of those who lost their lives to domestic violence.

“I think it's important for our young men to participate in events related to domestic violence. According to recent statistics, 1:3 college students will experience relationship abuse,” states head coach Travis Nichols. Our coaching staff wants to lead by example as we teach our young men about respect, accountability and community responsibility.”
