Men's Athlete of Week honor to G-House's Shenefield
The Pacific Coast Conference Men's Athlete of the Week for April 3-9 is Grossmont College baseball pitcher Hayden Shenefield.
Shenefield, a freshman right-hander out of El Camino Charter High School in Woodland Hills, appeared in two games during the week in the first-place Griffins' 4-1 and 2-0 victories over San Diego City College.
Shenefield threw 1 1/3 hitless, shutout innings with two strikeouts and no walks in the 4-1 game, earning a save.
He was the winning pitcher in the extra-inning 2-0 game, shutting out the Knights on three hits over 10 1/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking none. For the week, he struck out 18 and walked none.
Honorable mention was awarded to Palomar baseball outfielder Joey Cooper, Imperial Valley baseball infielder Leopoldo Gil Lamadrid and San Diego Mesa baseball first baseman William Law.
Cooper, a sophomore from Highland High School in Bakersfield, went 8-for-12 during the week as the state No. 9-ranked Comets swept three games from Mesa and defeated Fullerton 8-3 to go 24-6 on the season.
Cooper, who is batting .446 to rank fifth in the state, tripled in a 5-4 win over Mesa. He went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in a 13-4 win over the Olympians. And he came right back with a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI and three walks as the Comets came back from a five-run deficit in the final two innings to beat the Olympians again 11-10. Palomar remains tied with Grossmont in the loss column but has played three less conference games as the Griffins await their bye week. Along with most of Palomar's other starters, Cooper sat out the Fullerton game. T
Lamadrid, a sophomore from Calexico High School who leads Imperial Valley with a .313 batting average, went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Arabs to their first conference victory of 2017, 9-6 over College of the Desert.
Law, Mesa's sophomore first baseman from Cathedral Catholic High School and a transfer from Palomar, went 1-for-3 in each of the Olympians first two games with the Comets. In the third game of the series, he was 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs.
