Water Polo wins back to back matches at Ventura Tournament

With a new coaching staff heading into the 2019 campaign, there were more questions than answers for the San Diego Mesa women’s water polo team.

Although new head coach Beto Vasquez had previously served as an assistant coach in the program, a new staff with a primarily young team normally comes with it a time of transition.

‘They are two different coaches with two different styles,” states sophomore Kathya Argueta. “Coach Emma’s system relied on a lot of structure in the pool. While coach Beto also believes in structure, his system is a lot more free flowing, as in take advantage of what the opponent gives us.”

Another challenge for the women’s water polo team is the inexperience of having 13 first year players on the roster. Only four players from last years squad returned, Mia Lauer, Kathya Argueta, Katrin Gaines, and Isabella Cervantes.

The team has struggled out of the gates. However, this past weekend at the Ventura Tournament, things are starting to look up. The Olympians went 2-0 on Friday defeating El Camino College 8-7 and followed that up with an impressive 13-1 dominating win against Santa Monica College.

The women will continue their play at the Ventura Tournament tomorrow. They are scheduled to play against Merced College followed by Fullerton College.
