Fall 2019 Preview | Women's Water Polo

Fall 2019 Preview | Women's Water Polo

TELL US ABOUT THE 2018-19 SEASON:
I was recently hired as head coach, and I was not involved with the women's program in 2018-2019.  The team won the conference title for the second year in a row, and we are trying to continue that streak this upcoming season.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
In order to be successful as a team, we need to have solid fundamentals, develop team chemistry, and compete with lots of heart.

KEY RETURNING PLAYERS:
The key returners are Katrin Gaines, Mia Lauer, Sydney Fortune, Kathya Argueta, and Isabella Cervantes, and our starting goalie Mia Lauer. We will depend on their experience and leadership to help guide us to another conference championship. Ashley Greeven will also be returning but will be a redshirt.

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE TEAM AND WHAT HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM ARE THEY COMING FROM?
We have five confirmed incoming freshmen:
Nicole Moran (Sweetwater HS)
Izanna Hypse (Mission Bay HS)
Courtney Belliotti (Mission Hills HS)
Seraphim Nagel (University City HS)
Catalina Dorado (Mira Mesa HS)

We are very excited to have girls from all over the county joining us at Mesa to compete at the next level.

WHAT WILL BE OUR BIGGEST STRENGTH?
Our biggest strength will be our team chemistry.  Most of the girls knew each other and were already friends before coming to Mesa, so it will be easy for us to click as a unit.  I don't want to talk about our biggest weakness, but I will say that our biggest challenge will be our ability to remain mentally strong and cohesive as a group when we face adversity or experience failures.

GIVE ME A QUICK OVERALL VIEW OF OUR CONFERENCE:
Word through the grapevine is that we are favored to win the conference again. We will see what the season has planned for us.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON?
We would love to repeat as champions and continue the streak that started 2 years ago, but our main focus is to grow, develop, and improve altogether as whole.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COACHING STAFF:
We have already hired one assistant coach, Hector Sanchez. He brings tons of playing and coaching experience to the program.  Hector is a Mesa alum (he played for Coach Nate Resch on the men's water polo team), and he also currently serves as the head coach of the UCSD men's club water polo team.  He also brings more than 5 years of coaching high school girls water polo at Patrick Henry HS.  We are happy and excited to have Hector join the Mesa women's program.
