Race wide open for WWP title

Race wide open for WWP title

With half the season in the books, the race for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference women's water polo title is very tight.  The next three weeks will determine what program can call themselves champions of the PCAC.

San Diego Mesa currently sits on top of the PCAC standings at 3-0 following wins over Southwestern (16-2), Grossmont (13-6) and San Diego Miramar (15-1).  The Olympians are 9-6 overall and head into the second half of the PCAC schedule with a half-game lead on Grossmont.  The Griffins (6-5, 3-1) fell to Mesa (6-13) on September 24 and will get their shot at redemption on the 24th of October when the two clubs meet in San Diego.  If there is a dark horse in the standings it could be Palomar, who currently sits a game back in the standings.  The Comets suffered narrow losses to both teams in the first round of conference play, losing to Grossmont, 6-7, and San Diego Mesa, 6-9.

Mesa is looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the PCAC since Grossmont won the PCAC title in both 2013 and 2014.  A title in 2018 would be three conference championships in four years for the Olympians, who won the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in both 2015 and 2017.

The top goal scorer in the conference so far is Grossmont's Grace Martin, who has tallied 26 goals and 13 assists in 11 games.  She is followed closely by Palomar's Emma Thomas, who has 26 goals and 12 assists in 14 games played.  The third leading scorer in the conference thus far is Palomar's Katelyn Humphrey, who has 23 goals and four assists in 14 games this season.

Southwestern College will host the women's water polo conference championships on November 2-3.
