The last time the San Diego Mesa women’s volleyball team had a blemish on their record was over a month ago when they fall to Glendale College in four sets (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 31-29) at the RCC Quad. Since then, the team has rattled off eleven wins in a row including nine matches being closed out in straight sets.
One of the reasons for the success is the play of freshman Sabrina Speratti (Westview HS). “She’s been playing well all year, even during the summer, she has been on point,” states head coach Bobbie Jo Stall. “While everyone was dusting off the rust and getting in better shape, she was ready to go. What’s even more impressive, she’s only getting better.”
Speratti has played both opposite and outsider hitter for the Olympians. She has been dominant in both positions. In addition, she has excelled defensively and been consistent on the serving and passing. Speratti is currently fifth in the conference in kills per set (3.43) and third in kills (216).
Lizzie Wilson continues her dominant play leading the team in kills and has earned the most points of anybody on the team. Wilson is averaging 5.2 kills per set, which currently leads the state. “She’s been the person that makes this team go,” adds Stall. “She is our team captain, our leader, and all-around amazing teammate. Simply said, she takes care of business and leads by example.”
Although the team is dominating and currently atop the conference ladder, coach Stall warns that the team still has a lot of work to do. “I tell them they need to stay hungry and continue to work hard. We have so much more potential and we haven’t played our best ball yet. If we continue to work hard on the floor and in the gym, we’ll accomplish great things. We cannot get complacent”
The women will take on a conference opponent on Friday, October 25 at Imperial Valley College. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
