Olympians overwhelm Griffins, streak continues

San Diego Mesa College versus Grossmont College volleyball is a rivalry that goes back many years. When the schedule is released, this is a game that both coaching staff circle on the calendar.

It's for recruiting. It's for bragging rights. It's for the conference.

Last season, the teams split two very challenging matches. Mesa got the best of the Griffins during their first meeting going the distance in five sets winning 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-7). Grossmont avenged their loss in November defeating the Olympians 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 29-27).

With the history between these two teams, the Mesa coaching staff was expecting a tough battle ahead of them. However, on this night, that was not the case. The Olympians played almost perfect volleyball and continue their impressive 18 consecutive sets won by defeating Grossmont College 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21).

The team is riding a nine-game winning streak. In addition to the streak, the last time the squad dropped a set was over a month ago against SD City College in September.

The team will complete the month of October playing four straight games against conference opponents. The team will travel for their next three games. Wednesday, October 16 at Miramar College. Wednesday, October 23 at San Diego City College. Friday, October 25 at Imperial Valley College. The final game in October will be hosted at Mesa College on Wednesday, October 30 against Cuyamaca College. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
