Perez & Mickelson Shine at So.Cal Heptathlon/ Decathlon Championships

After a successful showing at the 2019 Aztec Invite, sophomores Jasmine Perez and Aaron Mickelsen both qualified to compete at the two-day 2019 Southern California Heptathlon / Decathlon Championship at Cerritos College. 

The meet acts as a qualifier for the CCCAA Championship in heptathlon and decathlon. The two-day event consisted of seven events for the women (100h, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, 800m). For the men, events included (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110h, discuss, pole vault, javelin, 1500m).  

In order to qualify for the state championships, an athlete is required to compete in their regional championships from the north and south. Participants who achieve “A” standards are first selected followed by the “B” standards. There will be a total of 12 athletes that will automatically qualify from the north and south.

Men's Standards  A:  3265     B:  4900
Women's Standards A: 3575  B: 3157

Mickelsen placed third with a score of 5577. His performance ranked 3rdon Mesa’s all time list and automatically qualifies him for the state championships.

Perez placed 9th with a score of 3402. She will have an outside shot at qualifying for states based on the results from the north region. 

“Both of our athletes represent the best in track and field because they compete in all events,” states head coach Sean Ricketts. “They both approached the meet with focus and executed everything we asked from them. They are competitors and we are proud of their performance.”
