Track & Field Edges Cal State LA 28-27

The San Diego Mesa College track and field team recently competed at the California State Los Angeles Invite. Although the weather was less than ideal, the men’s team edged Cal State LA, a four-year program, 28-27 through dual meet scoring (first 3 places in each event scored).

Due to the rain and field conditions, the hurdles, high jump, and pole vault were cancelled.

“The weather was a challenge, but we were pleased with our athlete’s ability to stay focused throughout the competition,” states head coach Sean Ricketts. “After three weeks of solid training, our goal this early in the season is to gain some valuable experience for all our athletes, which includes having to face tough conditions.”

Up next for the Olympians will be the Occidental Spring Break Distance Classic on Saturday, March 9. It will be a great opportunity to compete against both community college and four-year programs.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Bianca Encio 1st Place in the Women's Shot Put - 35'7.25
  • Men's 4x400m Relay 1st Place - 3:27 (Andy Orozco, Jake Burton, Saliou Ndiaye, Charles Price)
  • Oscar Navarro 2nd Place in the Men's Javelin - 151'5
  • Isaiah Labra 1st Place in the Men's 3000m Run - 8:45
