A Strong Start for Women's Softball

The San Diego Mesa College softball team kicked off their 2019 season with a successful road trip competing in the annual David "Hawk" Wilder Memorial Tournament.

On Friday, the Olympians played in one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Down 0-2 in the final inning, freshman Kassandra Solis (Otay Ranch HS) and sophomore Annemarie Fisher both received back to back walks. Freshman Kaleigh Lane (Our Lady of Peace HS) stepped up to the plate and laced a double, scoring both Lane and Fisher, bringing the game at 2-2. The tie did not last long after freshman Adrianna Dorame (Otay Ranch HS) hits a ground ball to the right side of the field to score the game winning run giving Mesa the 3-2 victory.

"It was a great game to start the season," states head coach Jaclyn Guidi. "This team showed what it's capable of and I am happy how we fought till the end. We never gave up, we just kept fighting and fighting."

Freshman Karli Ramsey (University City HS) closed out the game striking out the final 3 batters.

In the afternoon game, Mesa defeated Rio Hondo College 9-4.

On Saturday, the Olympians went 1-1 defeating Ventura College in the morning 9-2 and losing the final game 5-3 against Antelope Valley College.

"We started this season well," adds Guidi. "Our goal is to always make the playoffs so starting like this is great. We have a good hitting team and we have four solid pitchers that should allow us to compete in every game."

Freshman Kaleigh Lane is already showing her impact early in the season. Lane went 8 for 12 with 3 doubles and 2 home runs.

The Olympians are back on the field on Wednesday, January 30 as they travel to Saddleback College. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
