Men's and Women's Track to Compete at Occidental Distance Classic

The San Diego Mesa College men's and women's track and field team will be traveling to Los Angeles to compete in the 2019 Occidental Distance Classic.

So far this season, the team has been turning in good results in the throws, distance, and jumping events. This weekend, the squad will be looking for improved results in the sprints and hurdle events.

Head coach Sean Ricketts participates in meets where Mesa athletes can gain valuable experience by competing against quality opponents. The Occidental Classic will be a good opportunity to measure ourselves against quality community colleges as well as four-year programs.

"Our mindset this week was focusing on training and recovery," states head coach Sean Ricketts. "We have a strategy that's designed for us to improve as the season progresses."

The weather has been challenging all season. Last week at the Cal State Los Angeles Invite, a handful of events were cancelled due to rain and field conditions. Regardless of the weather, the coaching staff has been undeterred in preparing the team. "The weather should not be an issue this weekend," explains Ricketts. "Whatever the weather, we tell our athletes to focus on the race plan and block out everything else. We have to stick to the plan, which is to stay consistent, stay healthy, and stay focused."
