This past weekend, the San Diego Mesa Track and Field Team continued their success during the championship phase of the season at the SoCal Regional Prelims at Riverside City College. "Our athletes are familiar with the facility and have been prepared well. Their only task was to go out there and execute" states Coach Ricketts. The Regionals serves as a championship Meet for Southern California Community Colleges and as a qualifier to the CCCAA State Championships on May 17-18, 2019 at San Mateo, CA. The Prelims was a qualifier for track events, jumping events, and some throwing events where the top 8 athletes in laned track events and vertical jumps and the top 12 athletes in non-laned and horizontal jumps qualified onto the Regional Finals this next Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Riverside City College. The 10000m was the only Track final and the Men's and Women's Shot Put, Javelin, and Women's Hammer were all Prelims and Finals on Saturday.
"Our athletes performed well. Our athletes qualified as expected and others gained valuable experience in a championship setting. The highlight of the meet was Holly Stallman eclipsing 20 feet in the Women's Long Jump and breaking a 20-year-old school record held by Andria Booker. She improved in each of her three jumps in the prelim round and really put together her jump on her last attempt. This is a preview of the great things to come for our athletes in the upcoming weeks due to their hard work and preparation" explains Coach Ricketts. Along with Stallman's performance, Bianca Encio placed fourth in the Women's Shot Put with a Personal best of 11.60m, Davey Folsom placed fifth in the Men's Shot Put with a personal best of 14.74m (State Qualifier), Andrew Mitchell placed 5th with a personal best of 50.55m and Oscar Navarro placed 7th with a personal best of 48.79m in the Men's Javelin. Rounding out some of the top performances was Stefen Rasmuson's runner up finish in a personal best time of 31:58 in the Men's 10000m (State Qualifier).
The San Diego Mesa Track and Field Team will be back in action this Saturday at the SoCal Regional Finals at Riverside City College. Field events start at 9AM and Track events at 2:30PM.
