Fall 2019 Preview | Men's Soccer

TELL US A QUICK RECAP ABOUT THE TEAM LAST SEASON:
Last season I was hired late, which created challenges with recruiting and learning the system. The boys started off slowly but responded well and finished the season strong. We definitely lacked depth, which made for a tough season, but the boys showed grit and determination.

HOW DO WE IMPROVE AS A TEAM THIS SEASON?
We are much more organized and better prepared for the 2019 season.  It’s helpful to be loaded with talent.

WHO ARE OUR KEY RETURNING PLAYERS
The return of Zane Wade and red shirt Kian Meyer should be game changers this year. Many of our returners bring a confidence and work ethic that will help guide our freshman. Keep an eye on Manuel Gander and Oscar Sanchez, who are both poised to have strong seasons.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT OUR FRESHMAN JOINING THE TEAM THIS SEASON?
The player pool this year compared to last season is much better. It definitely helps that we got to start the recruiting battle as everyone else.

We are excited about all our players coming in, to name a few:
Matthew Guthrie (Scripps HS - forward)
Andrew Miranda (Rancho Bernardo HS - forward)
Jesus Garcia ( O’Farrell Charter School - midfielder)
Manuel Lopez (transfer from Cuyamaca)

Keep in mind that as the season progresses, many players emerge and become stand outs.

WITH A FAIRLY NEW ROSTER, WHAT ARE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS ABOUT THE TEAM:
We appear to be strong at every position, with faster speed of play and a higher soccer IQ and our bench will be much deeper.

WHAT WILL BE OUR BIGGEST STRENGTH?
Our biggest strength will be in center midfield, in conjunction with two very strong forwards that can finish. We should be fun to watch this year!

TELL US ABOUT OUR CONFERENCE THIS SEASON:
Two teams, San Bernardino and College of the Desert have left our conference, which ultimately hurts our power points, but gives us a better chance of winning our league. As always, our conference is VERY competitive, with the top four teams all having a chance to win league.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS THIS SEASON? WHAT IS THE MINDSET AND PHILOSOPHY?
I will keep this short “League Champions and Playoffs”.

WHO ARE THE NEW COACHES FOR THIS SEASON?
This year we hired Eli, a current San Diego Sockers player and a USD alumni soccer player.  He will be a strong addition to our coaching staff.
