After a disappointing 27-10 loss to Southwestern College, head coach Gary Watkins had one word for his players, “refocus.”
“Nobody is going to feel sorry for us,” states Watkins. “This is college football and winning games are difficult. After the game, we immediately analyze the good and the bad. Once we find solutions, we move forward in preparing for Golden West College.”
The players’ ability to get past last week will be tested. The message to the team was to not ignore the feelings they had, but rather turn them into positives. “There’s nothing we can do now to change the outcome of that game. We have to use these moments as teaching tools, ‘explained Watkins. “We have to get back to the fundamentals of football and remind our players to do their jobs.”
The Olympians had opportunities to turn the game around but failed to capitalize. One such critical moment was failing to score after freshman quarterback Jake Dunninway (St. Mary’s HS) drove the team 60 yards all the way to the Jaguars 4 yard line. If the Olympians had scored, and with the momentum favoring Mesa, the team would head into the 4thquarter being only down by 4 points.
Two defensive players who stood out were freshman defensive back Hunter Allan (Cathedral Catholic HS) and sophomore defensive lineman Hugh Anthony (Mar Vista HS). Both players were outstanding throughout the game. On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore wide receiver Antwoine Ware (Wagner HS) finished the evening with 6 catches for 86 yards.
Golden West College is led by Nick Mitchell who is entering his 12th year at the helm. They are a talented, physical, and disciplined team. The Olympians must execute and focus on the small details in order to come out with a victory.
