Player Diary | Trey Cox

The enthusiasm surrounding San Diego Mesa College Football is at an all-time high after a successful 9-2 season record. The Olympians capped the season with a bowl game victory by defeating Santa Ana 37 – 34 in the Southern California Bowl.

Before the bright lights and cheering fans, we asked sophomore quarterback Trey Cox to give us a glimpse of the grueling three-week training camp. Here’s the first part of the series.

The first day of fall football camp was great! The grind officially starts as we use the next 3 weeks to prepare our bodies for the upcoming season. From here on out, our schedule consists of football practice Monday through Saturday and meetings in between classes. We also have mandatory lifts with our strength and conditioning coach. It takes a toll on you, but these are the things necessary for us to get prepared.

Practice has been great and a bit hot. The last two days, the temperature has been over 90 degrees. We were able to put on our pads today, it’s exciting! The season opener vs. Southwestern College is just around the corner and our coaching staff is preparing us to be ready! Today we had more of our daily meetings and weights. We are installing new packages and schemes. The grind continues!

We are ‘live.’

‘Live’ is a term used to notify our team that the hitting is real. It’s similar to a scrimmage, the only difference is that we line up against our teammates. We’ve worked hard breaking down film and this is the first time we get to translate what we’ve learned on the field. This is also a time when we start learning what our roles are will be on the team. I believe I did some good things today, but there is definitely lots of room for improvement. Coach Watkins’ playbook is complex, knowing it inside and out is my responsibility.

As a student-athlete I have to keep a balance with my daily responsibilities. On top of making it to all my classes, I have to manage my time in attending numerous team meetings, weight training, and stay on top of my nutrition. Signing up for classes this semester was a breeze! The athletic department here at Mesa is extremely helpful. They have assisted me in which classes I need to take so I can stay on track. That’s it for now. Game day is near and I’ll make sure to provide more entries for you all.

The Olympians will travel to Chula Vista, CA this Saturday, September 1 to take on Southwestern College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
