The 2019 PCAC Women’s Beach Volleyball Pairs Championships are currently being held at San Diego Mesa College. The two-day event began on Wednesday and will conclude with the championship rounds on Friday.
The tournament will not only crown a new PCAC pairs champion, but will also serve as a qualifier to determine which teams will move forward to compete at regionals.
Raven Casas and Alina Snyder were victorious in both their matches which will advance them to the regional tournament. Casas and Snyder defeated Baylie Dashner and Emily Sundback from College of the Desert 21-10, 21-16. In their quarterfinal match, they defeated Alina Fletes and Kareemah Hopkins of San Diego City College 21-15, 21-8.
Casas and Snyder will play the #1 seed tandem of Desiree Elizondo and Aofiaolela Fa’agi from Grossmont College on Friday.
Ally Fergusson and Hannah Grimm defeated Daylah Jackson and Kally Norvell 21-2, 21-7 from San Diego City College. They then qualified for regionals after defeating Kacy Hele and Ciera Kelly 21-13, 21-12 from Mira Costa College.
Fergusson and Grimm will play the #5 seed of Barron and Deeann Schaal of San Diego City College on Friday.
“It was a really good day for our #1 and #2 teams today,” states head coach Kim Lester. “They were consistent, stayed with our game plan, and most important executed. Their performance was the best volleyball that I’ve seen them play all year.”
After winning their first round against Amber Colton and Cheyanne Johnson of Grossmont College, the team of Taylor Rosario and Macey Schonbachler came up short losing to Shannon Evans and Hanley Lomax of Mira Costa College in a tight match 21-19, 21-17.
“Taylor and Macey played great in their first match,” explained Lester. “Unfortunately, they fell a little short during their second match against Mira Costa College. If we had just executed a little better, we would have been able to close out that match."
Rosario and Schonbachler will still have an opportunity to advance as they are scheduled to play the 9thseed on Friday for an at-large bid.
Matches are scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. start on Friday. We encourage all Olympians who are able to come out and cheer our teams on. “The energy today was electric,” adds Lester. “The support from our softball team was phenomenal. We hope everyone comes out on Friday to support.
